He's in the middle of the last thing he wanted… and the best thing to ever happen.

Ace paramedic Conner Dixon has sworn to never live with another woman after raising his four younger sisters. They have been giving him gray hair since they lost their father fifteen years ago. Now they're all in love and Conner's ready to retire-- from worrying, fixing problems and cleaning up messes.

Of course, when his fellow paramedic, Gabrielle Evans, needs a place to stay after her apartment burns down, Conner can't say no. But it's no problem-- Gabby's just one of the guys.

Gabby's penchant for poker and her ability to overhaul a transmission definitely make her different from Conner's usual women. She also has no interest in getting involved with him. Conner's crazy mix of family and friends is the last thing Gabby needs right now. She has her sights set on medical school in the fall and knows success depends on focus and commitment.

But within forty-eight hours of moving in, Gabby's in the middle of a family crisis that could disprove all her I-don't-need-anyone bluster and Conner's in the middle of the last thing he wanted-a girl and all her stuff, all over his stuff. Still, the more she makes herself at home, the more he thinks that's maybe exactly where her stuff should be. For good.

Warning: Contains a girl who thinks she wants to be just one of the guys, a guy who happily proves why that won't work, and a very good reason to buy cinnamon roll icing-you know, other than for use on cinnamon rolls.

Review

I find myself sitting here writing this, feeling a mix of emotions. You see, Erin Nicholas’s Counting on Love series sucked me in from the very beginning and refused to let me go. So throughout the previous four books, I loved the stories and the fun, spicy rides that went along with them. I also had my favorite book boyfriends in this series-I’m looking at you Shane, Nate, and Cody. But somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew Conner’s book was going to be special. And I was in no way disappointed.

When Conner finds him and his team to an apartment building fire, he’s floored when he finds out it’s Gabby’s apartment building and that her home is gone. And if he was floored with that tidbit of info, he’s struck speechless when he also discovers that Gabby has boobs. Which leads to him thinking of her as a girl. And what does Conner do best with girls? Dote on them. With four sisters he helped raise, he has become essentially a master in doting. More than happy she’s ok, Conner can’t let go of the protective feeling that has practically knocked him on his ass, so he tells Gabby she’s staying with him for the night. Because, you know, that’s what friends do when they are in a pickle. But when she suggests that she can just crash on a friend’s couch, he comes up with multiple reasons as to why his place is better. This part of the book was hilarious. Gabby notices how uncomfortable Conner is all of a sudden and calls him out on the reason why…the boobs, curves, and long, soft hair he never noticed previously. And it only gets better from here.

There is just so much to this book that I like but don’t want to say because I feel like it could take away from the experience. I will say that watching Conner squirm was awesome! And I loved that Gabby was the one to put him through the reins. We had a little interaction time with her in previous books but didn’t know much about her. This was perfect because she was written to be just what Conner needed! She was perfect for him in every way that I wouldn’t change a thing about her!

And can we talk about Conner for a minute? You know how I mention Shane, Nate, and Cody being my favorites in this series? Umm, well, they were all knocked out of the park with Conner. Don’t get me wrong, I loved those other guys but we are shown another side of Conner that had my heart melting like butter outside on a hot day! So I’m letting everyone know here and now that I call first dibs on Conner!

So now that I’m done with longish fangirl review, let me leave you with a short list of why I loved this book:

~ Humor – All of Erin’s books you will find humor but I felt this one had me laughing the most. If you have read the previous books in this series you know that watching Conner squirm is a show in itself. Oh and there is this great scene where they are playing poker. I have one word to describe this…MAC. I’ll let all the Mac lovers out there chew on that. 😉
~ Connection – This is one of those things that are given to have a great love story. The love interests have to have a connection of some sort. I loved how Gabby and Conner were friends previously and moved into something more intimate. But there is also a connection with family
~ Love – Another given and kind of goes hand in hand with having a connection, but I couldn’t leave without touching on it. This is going to seem a little vague but once you read the book you’ll know what I’m talking about. I thought it was going to happen one way but happened another way and I love the way it went!!!

Author Bio

Erin Nicholas Author PhotoI’ve been reading romance since my mom first let me into her book cupboard when I was about fourteen. LaVyrle Spencer, Julie Garwood, Debbie Macomber… they took my ‘happily ever after’ ideas from animated princesses to real people in the real world.

I’ve been writing romance almost as long. Many a family car trip was spent with my head bent over a spiral notebook in the back seat. I’ll confess that my very first attempts at fiction were fantasy and paranormals, influenced by my father’s love of the Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and the original Alice in Wonderland. If Harry Potter had been around, I’m sure he would have been on the bedtime story shelf as well.

But it wasn’t long until I started writing about true love and that’s where I’ve been ever since.

I’m so thrilled to be able to share these stories with you! I hope that they make you smile, sigh, maybe even choke up a little. Most of all, I hope that they help you believe in magical things like first kisses, the spark of passion, and the power of true love.

  1. I’ve not read this author before, but your review makes me want to!!! This book sounds awesome, definitely putting the series on my TBR!

As for overbearing older brothers – I’ve got a few brothers, and none of them are overbearing. I guess I’m lucky that way! Granted, none of them live locally, so it makes it kind of hard LOL. But I love the idea of a brother being that protective of his sister 🙂

She is my favorite author Liz. I highly recommend reading anything by her. Start with her Bradfords series though. That way you’ll know the sub-characters in this series. I could go on and on about her books. 🙂
