The rules of (fake) engagement . . .
Leah Martin has spent her life trying to avoid temptation. But she's sick of low-fat snacks, counting calories, and her hyper-critical mom. Fortunately, her popular new bakery keeps her good and distracted. But there aren't enough éclairs in the world to distract Leah from the hotness that is Sam Cooper - or the fact that he just told her mother that they're engaged . . . which is a big, fat lie.
Sam sometime speaks before he thinks. So what started out as defending Leah's date-ability to her judgmental mother soon turned into having a fiancee! Now the plan is to keep up the fake engagement, stay "just friends," and make Leah's family loathe him enough to just call the whole thing off . But Sam has an insatiable sweet tooth, not only for Leah's decadent desserts but her decadent curves. Her full lips. Her bright green eyes. Yep, things aren't going quite according to plan. Now Sam has to convince Leah that he's for real . . . before their little lie turns into one big, sweet disaster.
I saw this book and requested it strictly for the cover. It’s cute…and the guy is hot. Then when I went to read it, I hesitated to begin. Not really sure why. I find myself doing that more and more lately for some reason. Anyway, a few days later, I started it. If I could figure out a way to time travel, I’d go back and kick my own ass for putting it off. I can honestly say I have only laughed out loud maybe a handful of times with from all the books I’ve read, and even then, it’s usually only a chuckle. Y’all have NO IDEA how much this book made me full-on laugh! It’s one of the funniest books I’ve read in quite some time. I did some snooping, and unless Alison writes under another pen name, this is only her fourth book she’s written. I think for such a new author, she shows some great talent penning a wonderful book!
So a little dirt on the story. I will forewarn you, it’s insta-love. I don’t know if it’s the humor or all the stuff that happens after Sam and Leah meet, but I honestly was not bothered by it-which is not something I usually say. Sam, with his big heart and issue with speaking before thinking, and Leah, with her body image and confidence issues, paired together remarkably well. Sam was able to bring Leah further and further out her little bubble she created for herself. Sam had your basic guy issue of being a commitment-phobe because of crazy ex-girlfriends, but I liked how he accepted quicker than she did that what they had was something special, even if he told himself he needed to stay away. When will guys learn?!
The rest of the story flowed along nicely. I will say that I wanted to punch Leah’s mom in the mouth a few times for the things she said to and about her. No mother should ever utter those words to their own child. I have my hopes set on a certain couple for the second book in this series, so, fingers crossed on that one!
Alison Bliss, congrats on earning yourself a new stalker. I promise I’m a nice one. 🙂 Cannot wait to see what else you have planned for the rest of this series!
